Stephen & George Jeffrey

Stephen was known as ‘The Healing Evangelist’ and George as one of greatest evangelists of 20th Century - he was an evangelist and Bible teacher.

Early Years

Stephen was born on 2nd September 1876 and was the 3rd son of Thomas and Kezia Jeffreys. George was born on 28th February 1889 and was the 6th son. Thomas and Kezia had 12 children in all – 8 boys and 4 girls.
They lived in Wales (Nantyffylon, Maesteg) and had a hard life. Four of their brothers and one of their sisters died. George himself was also a sickly child.

Stephen became a coal miner at the age of 12, and was a coal miner for 24 years, to help support the family as his dad, who was also a miner, struggled with asthma and breathings problems. Their father died aged 47 due to his bad health.

At 22 years old Stephen married Elizabeth Lewis, a local farmer’s daughter, and they had 3 girls and 1 boy. The youngest daughter died when she was just 6 months old. Their boy, Edward, went on to be a powerful evangelist who saw mighty signs and wonders confirm his message. His training ground was seeing masses of people saved and sick bodies healed as he travelled with his father.

Conversion

You have probably heard about the Welsh Revival that happened during 1904-1905. It was on 20th November 1904 during the Welsh Revival that the brothers became Christians - Stephen was 28 years old and George 15 years old. Many local Christians believed the two brothers were going to be used by God to do great works for Him!

George was in poor health, suffered from a speech impediment and had the beginnings of facial paralysis. A number of years after his conversion he got baptised in the Holy Spirit and was miraculously healed.

The Ministry

George started preaching and soon Stephen joined him. One of the early mini revivals occurred in a small village in Wales (Cwmtwrch) where a 3 day visit turned into a 7 week mission and 130 people gave their lives to Jesus from that small village. There was also remarkable healings that took place too.

  • The Jeffreys brothers saw thousands upon thousands give their lives to Jesus... in Birmingham there was 10,000 converts... in Europe 14,000 converts and so on...
  • Wherever Stephen and George went dramatic healings and creative miracles occurred. The crippled walked, the blind saw, tumours disappeared and more.
  • People with rheumatoid arthritis would be prayed for and their bodies would crunch and contort back into place as they were able to straighten up perfectly.
  • During their meetings bones could be heard cracking and popping as people were healed.
  • On one occasion six people who came in wheelchairs were healed sufficiently to push their chairs home themselves.
  • One creative miracle occurred when Stephen prayed for a 13 year old girl called Celia Brown who was blind because she had no eyes, just empty sockets, and a pair of blue eyes grew in the sockets and she was able to see.
  • In one church where Stephen preached a vision of the head of Jesus appeared on the wall behind him. It was an image of The Man of Sorrows with the Crown of Thorns upon His head. The eyes were said to be alive and moving – full of love and compassion. It stayed there for many hours and many came to see it including unbelievers. Days later World War 1 started!
  • In the 1920’s they came to London and even preached in town halls and other such venues near to Barking, East Ham, Walthamstow and Southend-on Sea.
  • The Birth of Churches

George was part of the Elim Movement and founded the Elim Pentecostal Church also known as the Elim Foursquare Gospel Alliance. Kensington Temple (bought by Elim in 1931) is probably one of the most famous Elim churches. Stephen was also a part of the Elim Movement, but later he joined the Assemblies of God. The brothers did join forces again later. George also founded the Elim Bible College in Clapham, which has since moved and become Regent Theological College.

    Their Legacy

Stephen and George Jeffreys (The Jeffreys Brothers) had amazing calls of God on their lives and they saw incredible things – salvations, healings and people being set free from the devil’s grip. They founded churches and colleges that still exist to this day. Stephen had a son called Edward who learnt from him and his uncle and had a powerful evangelistic ministry with signs & wonders following.

I hope and pray that men and women like Stephen and George Jeffreys, who were on fire for God and gave their lives to serve Jesus, inspire you and me to do likewise.

Stephen got arthritis and died shortly after his wife (27th October 1943) on 18th November 1943. George died in 1962 quite suddenly.
